The Parent and Educator Partnership

"When families are involved at home and at school, children do better in school and the schools get better" (Anne T. Henderson, 2007).   

PEP's aim is to improve meaningful participation of parents in their child's education across Illinois.  Our work includes:

• Developing, equipping, and supporting Parent Leadership;
• Providing training, information, and support to parents of students with disabilities about the Individuals with Disabilities Educational Act;
• Assisting school districts with implementing and sustaining partnership practices; and
• Supporting the Illinois State Board of Education with State Performance Plan (SPP) Indicator #8.

In part, our in-kind work is accomplished through providing the following:

• Resources for parents and educators to access information;
• Lending Library for free checkout and returns;
• Toll-free support line, 877-317-2733, and an online contact form; and
• Training, technical assistance, and coaching on IDEA, Collaboration, and Family Engagement.

The PEP assists school districts with developing and sustaining parent leadership and school-based programs for partnerships through training, technical assistance, and coaching.

Parent Leadership

We start with the premise that all parents are leaders.  Parental leadership roles include:

• Teachers of their own children
• Supporters of their children's school
• Decision-makers in their child's education or for all students
• Leaders of other parents

The Parent and Educator Partnership is involved in two parent leadership programs to assist parents in the continuum of their leadership roles.

Partnerships

School, Family, and Community Partnership

Schools that are well organized, safe, and supportive are much more likely to be successful.  Specifically, researchers determined five essential components for school success and involved families, when the entire school staff builds strong relationships with families and communities to support learning is one of the 5 Essentials.
