Sarah has a total of eight children, six of them have special needs and are receiving services in the Blue Ridge school district. Sarah was a foster parent for ten years and adopted six children through DCFS. She also has worked with the Illinois Foster Adoptive Parent Association for fifteen plus years and is currently on their board of directors. One of her roles with this organization is to represent the group on as a member of the Adoption Advisory Council for DCFS. Sarah is a Special Olympics coach for Mahomet-Seymour group. Sarah also has an Associate's degree from Parkland College and a Bachelors' in Arts with a minor in psychology from Eastern Illinois University.

Tri County Special Education has received grant funding from the Illinois State Board of Education to fund this position. This parent mentor position has been expanded to cover specific counties of Illinois. One of our goals is to locate and/or develop support groups for parents of children with disabilities and connect parents to those groups. Sarah will work with parents to create a support network for parents, as well as guide parents through the maze of special education.

The ISBE and the Parent Mentor Project want to learn more about the experiences of parents with children who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and the impact of the services of the Parent Mentor working in your area.
