Joy is the single mother of a 13-year old daughter with congenital myotonic dystrophy, whose challenges from this multi-system neuromuscular disease include low muscle tone, speech, and attention difficulties, and cognitive impairments. Once her daughter began receiving services at age 3, Joy began the quest to learn as much as possible about how she could best support her child in all areas of her life. She recognizes this is an ongoing process that changes with her daughter's needs and wants to share the information she has with others in hopes of making their experience a little easier.

Joy has worked as a Parent Mentor at SEDOL for over 4 years. During that time, she has expanded her knowledge of special education and has seen firsthand the importance of open communication and positive partnerships between families and schools. Joy is a member of the IL State Board of Education Task Force for Accessible Parent Special Education Materials and participates in the Parent and Educator Partnership curriculum development team. She has an A.A.S. Degree in Marketing Management and previously worked in sales and human resource administration.
