Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards describe the content and skills for students in grades K - 12 for social and emotional learning. These standards have been developed in accordance with The Illinois Children's Mental Health Act of 2003 (Section 15(a) of Public Act 93-0495). This Act calls upon the Illinois State Board of Education to "develop and implement a plan to incorporate social and emotional development standards as part of the Illinois Learning Standards."

This ground-breaking legislation established a new direction for education in Illinois. It embraces the idea that public schools can integrate SEL instruction with core academic subjects, and that children who require these skill are more successful in school, work and life.

Social Emotional Learning is a process through which children and adults develop fundamental emotional and social skills to handle themselves, their relationships, and their tasks, effectively and ethically.

The Illinois Social Emotional Learning goals are:

Goal 1: Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success.

Goal 2: Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships.

Goal 3: Demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts.
