President's Freedom Commission On Mental Health
In February 2001, President George W. Bush announced his New
Freedom Initiative to promote increased access to educational and
employment opportunities for people with disabilities. The
Initiative also promotes increased access to assistive and
universally designed technologies and full access to community
life. Not since the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - the
landmark legislation providing protections against discrimination -
and the Supreme Court's Olmstead v. L.C. decision, which affirmed
the right to live in community settings, has there been cause for
such promise and opportunity for full community participation for
all people with disabilities, including those with psychiatric
disabilities.
