Parent Mentor
Devila Thekdi
Originally from India, Devila is now a U.S. citizen. She lives with her husband and three daughters in Sterling, Illinois. She received her education (B.S. and M.S.) in India. She has also continued her education at Northern Illinois University. Her two older daughters were born with an enzyme deficiency, a genetic disorder called "Gaucher" disease. At present, they are on lifetime medication called Cerazyme, an Enzyme Replacement Therapy. The deficiency affects her daughters' lives medically, physically and educationally. Devila has learned to deal with various problems including finding the right doctor to diagnosis their disease, resources, insurance to cover the medicine cost, and working with the schools. Also provides educational presentation during the Parent Support Group. Parent Support group is organized by a Parent Mentor Devila Thekdi. Parent Mentor also helps parents with Special Education law, procedure, IEP process, and community and outside resources and trainings and workshop, and much more..
