Maribel Huerta has served as the Parent and Educator Liaison for Chicago Public School's District 299 Office of Specialized Services (OSS) since April of 2007. There are approximately 53,000 students with special needs in CPS. With over ten years experience with the Chicago Public Schools, she has worn the hat of: Operations and Compliance Manager of the Charter Schools, Executive Assistant to the Chief Officer of Specialized Services, and facilitator for the OSS' Professional Development Unit.

Maribel was born and raised in Chicago, is married to a Chicago police officer and has three young boys attending Chicago Public Schools, the youngest receiving specialized services. Maribel has her Bachelors of Business Administration and is currently working on her Master’s Degree.

Mrs. Huerta comes from a large family, many of who are educators and public servants, so giving back to the community is something that comes very natural to her. She believes that empowering parents is a means for improving student achievement. Maribel aspires to become a leader in the Chicago community, making decisions that continuously improve the lives of children.

Mentor News

El Valor recently invited Maribel Huerta, Chicago Public Schools’ Parent and Educator Liaison and PEP's Chicago’s Lead Parent Mentor to the launch of their Latino Leadership Connections Project. This was an exciting opportunity, where Maribel met leaders from both private and government organizations, like ISBE Chairman, Mr. Jesse H. Ruiz, and Mr. Jorge J. Ferraez, the event’s Keynote Speaker, the accomplished publisher of Latino Leaders, The National Magazine of the Successful American Latino.

Another notable event occurred on Thursday, December 4, 2008, where alongside Elizabeth Hanselman, ISBE’s Assistant Superintendent of Special Education, Maribel Huerta presented and served as co-panelist at Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation with a focus on “The Adequacy and Quality of Public Education in Illinois for Latino Students with Disabilities.” Over the last eight years Chicago Public Schools has seen a steady growth in their Latino student population, as well as a steady growth in their population of student with disabilities, also of Latino decent.
