Parent Survey - Special Education FAQ

Common Questions/Concerns:

  • How should I respond if the question doesn't really apply? Leave it blank.
  • Should this survey be answered based on my experience with my home school or the co-op where my child attends? Your home school.
  • I have a dispute I need help resolving: Call the Parent and Educator Partnership at (877) 317-2733 for assistance.
  • Student no longer at home: Disregard the survey.
  • My student doesn't have a disability: If the student is receiving any services such as speech therapy they will have an IEP. As a result, a survey might be sent to you.
  • Should I bring the survey to my child's school to answer the Teachers and administrators and School sections of the survey? No, those sections are looking for your opinion of how the teachers and administrators and schools are doing on those questions.
  • I lost my return envelope. I need the address to mail the survey to: Measurement Inc., 423 Morris, Durham, NC 27701-2128
  • Are the results of the survey posted anywhere for parents or administrators to view them? The results will be posted online at ISBE within the annual performance report and in the State Performance Plan. Look at Indicator 8 in each of these documents.

  • Each question from the survey is explained below:


    Schools' Efforts to Partner with Parents

    1. I am considered an equal partner with teachers and other professionals in planning my child's program.

    Explanation: When planning your child's programming, do you feel that you are treated equally and as a partner with the teachers and any other professionals involved?

    2. I was offered special assistance (such as child care) so that I could participate in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting.

    Explanation: Were you offered any special assistance to allow you to participate in your child's IEP meeting?

    3. At the IEP Meeting, we discussed how my child would participate in statewide assessments.

    Explanation: Was there discussion surrounding the topic of how your child would participate in statewide assessments?

    4. At the IEP meeting, we discussed accomodations and modifications that my child would need.

    Explanation: Was there discussion surrounding the topic of accomodations and modifications for your child?

    5. All of my concerns and recommendations were documented on the IEP.

    Explanation: Were all of the concerns and recommendations that you expressed during the IEP meeting noted on the IEP?

    6. Written justification was given for the extent that my child would not receive services in the regular classroom.

    Explanation: Was documentation given to justify why your child would not receive services in the regular classroom?

    7. I was given information about organizations that offer support for parents of students with disabilities.

    Explanation: Were you provided with information about organizations that can off you support as a parent of a student with disabilities?

    8. I have been asked for my opinion about how well special education services are meeting my child's needs.

    Explanation: Were you asked if you feel that the special education services being provided to your child meet their needs?

    9. My child's evaluation report is written in terms I understand.

    Explanation: Are you able to understand the evaluation of your child?

    10. Written information I receive is written in an understandable way.

    Explanation: Are you able to understand written information you receive?

    11. Teachers are available to speak with me.

    Explanation: Are you able to speak to with teachers when you have the need to do so?

    12. Teachers treat me as a team member.

    Explanation: Are you treated as a team member in your child's education by your child's teacher?


    Teachers and administrators:

    13. - seek out parent input.

    Explanation: Do you feel that the teachers and administrators involved in your child's education seek out your input?

    14. - show sensitivity to the needs of students with disabilities and their families.

    Explanation: Do you feel that the teachers and administrators involved in your chid's education show sensitivity to your child's needs as well as your needs?

    15. - encourage me to participate in the decision-making process.

    Explanation: Do you feel encouraged to participate in the decision-making process as it relates to your child's education?

    16. - respect my cultural heritage.

    Explanation: Do you feel that your cultural beliefs are respected by the teachers and administrators involved in your child's education?

    17. - ensure that I have fully understood the Procedural Safeguards (the rules in federal law that protect the rights of parents).

    Explanation: Do you feel that the teachers and administrators involved in your child's education take the time to ensure that you understand the Procedural Safeguards?


    The school:

    18. - has a person on staff who is available to answer parents' questions.

    Explanation: Does your child's school have a person who can answer your questions?

    19. - communicates regularly with me regarding my child's progress on IEP goals.

    Explanation: Do you have communication with someone from the school your child attends regarding your child's progress on IEP goals?

    20. - gives me choices with regard to services that address my child's needs.

    Explanation: Do you have choices regarding services received by your child?

    Explanation: Are trainings offered to you that address special education issues?

    Explanation: Does the school provide any help needed for you to play an active role in your child's education?

    24. - provides information on agencies that can assist my child in the transition from school.

    Explanation: Does the school provide contact information on agencies that work on assisting with transitioning out of school?

    25. - explains what options parents have if they disagree with a decision of the school.

    Explanation: Does the school explain what options or next steps you as a parent have when you disagree with a decision they make regarding your child?
